Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is not hurrying the team to give him a contract extension. Earlier in the offseason, the Browns picked up the former Oklahoma Sooner’s fifth-year option on his rookie contract since being the number one overall pick back in the 2018 draft.

His agent, Jack Mills, however, says that an extension should be done with Mayfield before the summer is out. The quarterback is not in any mood to rush, as it seems. But he would be okay if he did get an extension before the season starts. As for his agent, that’s a different story.

According to the cbssports.com article, “Mills says that he expects something to be done this summer as it relates to an extension for Mayfield, who is coming off a solid 2020 season that saw him throw 26 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. Mayfield’s play helped the Browns win 11 regular-season games before the franchise won its first playoff game in 26 years. ‘We’re not going to be dragging it out,’ Mills told TheLandOnDemand.com’s Tony Grossi. ‘I think there’s been enough contracts done for quarterbacks lately that give us a pretty good idea of what the market is. And, of course, we know that the [salary] cap is going up this year but it’s going up next year and next.’”

Some quarterbacks already have received some big-money contracts over the past couple of years in the NFL. Take, for example, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes. His 2020 deal was a 10-year contract that totaled $450 million. And back in March, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who is coming off of an injury-riddled 2020, signed a four-year deal that was valued at $160 million.

If he does signs an extension with the Browns, Mayfield would become the first quarterback from the 2018 draft class to receive for their contract. Not even Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson can lay claim to that statistic.

As for what’s ahead, Mayfield’s agent is confident about a deal getting done soon.

“We pretty much know what’s coming on down the road and what’s been done. We don’t have any particular reluctance about doing a deal… But I think something will be done this summer. As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that pretty much would be in the team’s control.”

Baker Mayfield is developing himself into one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. If the Browns can give him an extension, maybe he will be the answer to the franchise’s woes at signal-caller.
